About Caley Vickerman, The Haiku Mistress:
Actor and Educator, Caley Vickerman, discovered haiku in 6th grade and (despite a brief obsession with magnetic poetry in high school) they remain to this day a favorite method of expression; simple, precise and immeasurably powerful.
It became her fervent wish to create events that celebrated haiku (and humanity). Thus the Guerilla Haiku Movement was born! And the Haiku Mistress gratefully continues to celebrate!

“In the last 24 years I’ve spent much of my time in studying the astonishing frogs of Madagascar, a country that is extraordinarily rich in amphibian species (more than 290 currently known, and many other candidate species), but that is also also dramatically fragile and delicate. In all these years I visited many of the country rainforests, savannahs and deserts, searching for herps and for documenting their status. Strangely (surprisingly!!) enough, we did not detect (yet?) any extinct Malagasy frog, although this perception may be misleading: the high number of species still to be described clearly advocates for the former existence (and probable extinction) of unknown species.”

“Susan Newman’s new curriculum Frogs, Amphibians and Their Threatened Environment: Discovery and Expression through Art, K-3 (including many beautiful photos of frogs) provides a new way for children to learn about amphibians and express appreciation of this ‘living art’ through their own artistic work. This curriculum addresses the need for biology and art to not always be taught as separate subjects. This interdisciplinary approach may foster greater understanding of biological concepts and the opportunity to develop a more personal meaning with the natural world through observation and interpretation.”
— Rachel Rommel, Community Education Officer, Amphibian Ark
“Susan has designed a course about amphibians that combines both creativity and science, providing an opportunity where the traditional school classroom doesn’t have to stick to the single boring plan but can bridge several subjects to generate interest in and knowledge about nature through artwork. The designed program is fun, informative, and factual, allowing students to express themselves creatively with amphibians on the mind.”
– Devin Edmonds, Amphibian Conservation Director, Association Mitsinjo
On publication day, June 26, 2013, many of the contributing authors participated in an all-day junket on a Google+ Hangout.
